Visualizing the land surface explains and explores the composition of the land surface and outlines how it has been studied. Dynamics of the land surface considers the dynamics affecting the earth’s land surface including its influences, processes and the changes that have occurred. Environments of the land surface looks to understand the land surface in major world regions highlighting differences between the areas. Management of the land surface is an examination of the current and future prospects of the management of the earth’s land surface.
Chapter 8: Temperate and Mediterranean Environments
Temperate and Mediterranean Environments
The temperate zone presents several paradoxes. First, although they are most familiar, temperate landscapes have often been visualized as those remaining when other, more distinctive world environments have been identified; hence the characteristics of the temperate zone have not been explicitly described, merely thought of as what is left! Second, despite being the most intensively studied, and the source of many concepts, inspiring the normal cycle of erosion and the importance of the drainage basin as the basis for hydrological understanding of runoff generation, until relatively recently we did not have an adequate understanding of the zone. Third, although the zone bears the clear imprint of many former climates and environmental conditions, it has often been taken as ...
