Visualizing the land surface explains and explores the composition of the land surface and outlines how it has been studied. Dynamics of the land surface considers the dynamics affecting the earth’s land surface including its influences, processes and the changes that have occurred. Environments of the land surface looks to understand the land surface in major world regions highlighting differences between the areas. Management of the land surface is an examination of the current and future prospects of the management of the earth’s land surface.

4.1 Controls on Processes
In his book A Brief History of Time Stephen Hawking (1988) wrote ‘Someone told me that each equation included in the book would halve the sales’. However, an equation can provide a context for the processes which fashion the surface of the Earth (see Table 4.1). Consideration of processes (P) requires comment on three things: the general relationships that exist for any particular process; what forms of balance may occur; and what types of processes are responsible for fashioning the land surface.
Processes involve transfers, that is flux, of energy or mass at or near the land surface. The work done in such transfers is the result of application of ...
