Okay, I admit it. Sometimes I read letters and essays from the eighteenth and nineteenth century and I find myself thinking, sheesh, hurry it up, buddy! What’s up with these long, circuitous asides! Often, even our Snapchat-era students presume that if they write more, they are writing better. Not true. When students add extraneous details to their writing, they take away from their writing. The piece can be so embedded with adjectives and asides that the reader cannot keep track of the main idea of the text.
