Systematic classroom observation

Section 2 focuses on the school setting. This chapter begins with a discussion of the importance of detailed observation of individual students in educational contexts. Full details of two new systematic classroom observation schedules devised by the author are presented. Extracts from case studies illustrate three practical applications of the observation techniques:

  • to facilitate the gathering of practice-based evidence in assessment processes;
  • to help in monitoring the effects of medication or other interventions; and
  • to identify contextual and curricular settings and approaches which may help teachers to enhance on-task behaviour.
