The year was 1993, and I was teaching on the Apple Team at Plaza Middle School in Virginia Beach. The subject was United States history, and my four classes were studying the period just prior to the Civil War. Some students were giving abolitionist speeches for their classmates. I was sitting off to the side as a young African American student made one such impassioned speech. When she was done, there was complete silence for a few seconds. Utter silence.
