Drug and alcohol abuse: Getting “high” and sinking low

Illegal drugs, and the abuse of legal ones, have plagued our society for decades. Worse is that drugs and alcohol have become readily available to children. Kids get involved with drugs and alcohol for a variety of reasons. Some are influenced by peer pressure, “because everyone else is doing it,” and use drugs and alcohol as a potentially dangerous form of recreation and entertainment. Others consider it more adultlike. On occasion, it is an experiment that gets out of hand. For the 8% youngster, it can also be a remedy to cope with the very real problems of life, a means to medicate against emotional pain.
