Redefining what's newsworthy: Towards 24-hour news values and conventions?
News Values: What Makes Television Journalism Distinctive?

For many journalists and media professionals, deciding ‘what's news’ is something they learn on the job. Journalists often suggest they are able to ‘sniff out’ a good story as opposed to following a set of guidelines or an instruction manual. In the fast-paced environment of journalism, practitioner accounts tend to apply ‘gut feeling’ to make sense of their news gathering (Marr 2004; Scruton, cited in Peak and Fisher 2000). If this is taken at face value it implies the selection of news is somehow ‘discovered’ by journalists on a daily basis. The reality, of course, is altogether different.
