The term Web 2.0 refers to the second generation of the World Wide Web, with a shift away from static Web pages and amove toward content that is dynamic and can be shared. Common Web 2.0 tools such as blogs, wikis, and social networks can be used to support collaboration and communication in virtually any instructional environment—when they aren't blocked by network filters.

Away from school, growing numbers of students are engaged in creating and publishing online content, gaming, and inhabiting virtual worlds.
