Metre Reading?
In a world where great faith is put in numbers, there is a temptation to think of assessment in English as something as straightforward as metre reading. When the gas or electricity metre is read some numbers are scribbled down to record the measurement. When it comes to assessment in English, measurement is involved and is recorded but there the similarity with metre reading ends. In English teaching assessment is not primarily about numbers, it is about people and about supporting teaching and learning.
