In the first chapter of this book different models, or emphases, within English teaching were presented and the importance of the ‘personal growth’ model for English teachers was considered. It is fitting, therefore, that this final chapter should return to the subject of personal development through English. This is acknowledged at the beginning of The National Curriculum for England: English, for even before the programmes of study, a statement is included about the sort of personal development an education in English can provide and a whole section is devoted to the promotion of ‘pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development through English’ (DfEE/QCA, 1999: 8).
