Plot shows up on tests in different forms. Students may address it via multiple choice or writing about the main problem and solution. As students progress through the grades, text sophistication increases, and thus students need to be able to identify multiple plots. More tips:
- Teach students to compare/contrast plots and character reactions within a text and between two texts.
- Students need to understand the difference between plot (what happens, including the problem/solution) and theme (the central idea or message).
- Summarizing requires identifying the most important events, and to do so students need to be adept at communicating how events relate to characters’ problems.
