Character: Characters can be simple (flat, static, like Judy Moody) or complex (round, dynamic, like August in Wonder). To be complex, characters need to change, possess conflicting traits or needs, and have a rich inner life that kind of combusts as the person interacts with others and his or her environment. The character’s journey is often represented as an arc: What they are like or where they are when the story begins and when it ends.

Character Traits: The personality and behaviors as well as the physical attributes of a character. As the character emerges, different traits can be revealed through stated or implied motivations and feelings, thoughts, words, and actions.
