In Grade 5 and up, compare and contrast is a staple of testing. Give students plenty and varied practice with this skill, but keep it authentic and engaging by having students apply it to texts they choose. Other tips:
- Students constantly compare movies, sequels, sneaker brands, apps, musicians, restaurants—you name it. So harness the power of these real-life comparisons as the basis for oral and written opinions that pit one student’s point of view against another’s.
- As you read aloud various texts, invite students to notice moments when characters most display divergent takes on events
- Photocopy Two Views (page 130) and the excerpts from Wonder (page 131). Share the prompts from Lesson 19 (page 122).
