Part 4: Point of View
Perhaps one of the most common test questions is “What was the author’s purpose in writing this piece?” The answer choices are usually to persuade, to inform, or to entertain. Once in a while to express or to explain and describe is included on the exams.
The tricky thing is, authors rarely write and publish with a single, clear-cut purpose in mind. When I think of fiction, nonfiction, and memoir authors today—Jon Krakauer, Anne Lamott, and Elizabeth Gilbert are three favorites out of two hundred!—I consider them writers whose narrative structure and prose are so sterling that surely their purpose was to inform and to entertain.
