Choral Reading
As a teacher of middle school ELLs, Ms. Goguen often used choral reading to build social and academic oral language. One paper that she found particularly useful for supporting choral reading was published in The Reading Teacher (McCauley & McCauley, 1992). Strategy 28 is based on this work.
Theory and/or Research Underlying the Strategy
Choral reading is included in this unit because it effectively supports the development of oral language fluency by providing repeated practice in a safe environment where potential errors are masked by multiple voices. This safety net encourages ELLs to feel comfortable in trying out new language structures and in making mistakes, both of which are likely to expand vocabulary, increase language proficiency, and contribute to overall understanding.
