Part 1 of this book provides a background to character education. Chapter 1 makes the case for why character matters as well as outlining why character education is seeing a resurgence in the UK and elsewhere. Chapter 2 describes what character and character education are, and, just as importantly, what character education is not. In this chapter a description of the different types of virtues that make up character are described – these are often considered the building blocks of character. Chapter 3 covers the theory behind character education and describes how different disciplines conceive of the subject.
