Character matters. As more and more schools are choosing to teach Character Education, trainee and beginning teachers need to know more. What is Character Education? Can it really be ‘taught’? Part 1 made the case that character can be taught and caught. Part 2 explores approaches and strategies for ‘teaching character’ in primary schools. This part is split into three chapters. Chapter 5 describes what a discrete taught course in character education might encompass and how this relates to other subjects such as PSHE and citizenship. Chapter 6 explains how character can be educated through and within other subjects such as English, maths, science and PE. Both these chapters provide practical advice and lesson ideas for ensuring that character education is a visible and conscious part of primary schooling.
