Activating Cooperative Learning

Cooperative group learning (CGL) is the use of small student groups to allow students to research and debate together, teach each other, and present findings as a group. There have been over 600 studies since the 1980s that support the effectiveness of CGL (see, e.g., Johnson & Johnson, 1981; Johnson, Johnson, and Holubec, 1998; Marzano, Pickering, & Pollock 2001; Dean et al., 2012; Cawelti, 2004). Synthesizing the research on cooperative group learning has an effect size of 0.73 with an associated percentile gain on standardized assessments of 27. A study by Brady and Tsay (2010) supports that cooperative learning is an active pedagogy that fosters higher academic achievement.
