Previously in this book, we operationally defined the concepts of data, information, and knowledge. That was done because those concepts are widely used in the business literature with myriad meanings and also because those concepts are too important for this book to be used in a loose way, which is more often than not what happens when they are not at least operationally defined. According to the operational definitions presented earlier, data are used to store and convey information and knowledge, information is eminently descriptive, and knowledge is eminently associative.
