Few aspects of the human condition are more pervasive than emotion. Emotions are the theme of art, music, drama, and comedy. They inspire and frustrate; they empower and devastate; they make us laugh and make us cry. But for all their complexity and mystique, emotions are not beyond our understanding, nor are they beyond our control. Although emotions are relatively brief episodes of physiological arousal, the interpretation of this arousal and our expressive response are the result of cognitive processes (Frijda, 2000). An integral part of these cognitive processes is our ability to understand the social and relational context in which the emotion was experienced and the possible implications of whether and how we communicate the emotion.
