Data is fundamental to student-centered coaching. It moves the coaching conversation away from what a teacher and coach think the teacher should be doing and focuses it on using student evidence to determine what they now know the teacher can be doing to improve student achievement.

Not too long ago, data played a minor role in guiding curriculum and instruction. Decisions were based on arbitrary ideas about what to teach and were often grounded more on personal philosophy than on student learning targets. Today, districts face federal and local requirements to use a narrow array of assessments in ways that may not readily inform instruction either.
