Crafting a culture of learning

One of the toughest aspects of improving schools is managing through issues of climate and culture. We often focus on creating systems and structures, overlook the underlying culture, and are then surprised when things fall apart. More than once, I have found myself at a barbeque and a friend with school-age kids asks, “What is the one thing that you think makes the biggest difference for schools to be successful?” My answer is inevitably, “It takes a principal who understands how to craft the school culture while simultaneously providing the necessary support for students and teachers.” They nod their head, take a sip of their drink, and change the subject.
