It's a late summer day as I navigate my way to an elementary school in a leafy suburb north of Chicago. Today, I'll be working with a brand-new literacy coach and thoughts are racing through my head as I anticipate how to help Mary Sue transition from veteran teacher to literacy coach.

Like most coaches, Mary Sue comes from the teaching ranks, where the day is structured by ringing bells, recess schedules, and a specific amount of minutes designated for each subject area.
