The Kindness of Strangers: Hospitality in Organizational Communication Scholarship
This invited essay sought to apply the aesthetics of ambiguity and contingency to my own sub discipline, organizational communication. The hospitality metaphor illustrated the overriding importance of coordinated action—of kindness to one's colleagues, regardless of scholarly perspective—as a positive alternative to focusing on intellectual coherence and the elusive shared meaning.
The goal of the volume in which this paper appeared (Foundations of Organizational Communication: Finding Common Ground) was to calla much-needed truce between various factions within organizational communication.
