Just as there is no one way to speak, so there is no one way to listen. We listen according to categories of our own, we frame questions out of schema we have devised, and we interpret stories within a narrative context understandable only to us. Before attempting to report and interpret what we heard from the women we interviewed, we will identify the clinical and intellectual roots out of which we have grown and to which we are indebted.
