Introduction
In the preceding chapter, we considered the need for regular observations and assessments within our work with children with special needs. To be meaningful, observations need to inform our planning and any intervention programmes or strategies we put in place to support progress.
It is now widely acknowledged that early intervention is essential to ensure all children are given opportunities to achieve their full potential and this was embedded in the Removing Barriers to Achievement report (DfES, 2004c):
