Introduction
Social work is a public service which adapts, evolves and changes in response to political, economic and organisational contexts. Most people agree that there is a need for social services of some sort, but debates persist around to what extent and how they should be funded and managed. In this chapter we consider two key mechanisms of societal structure, economics and politics. We explore how they contribute to theoretically driven policies – specifically considering austerity, responsibilisation and troubled families – and shape the way social work is organised to respond.
