This essay takes a critical but optimistic view of the future of the social work profession. Paula Allen-Meares and Yosikazu DeRoos focus on the potential impact on social work of several major external influences: the restructuring of the nation's welfare system, the educational transformation of the liberal arts and social sciences, developments in the biological sciences and health/mental health care, and the effects of computer technology. Although these developments will pose significant challenges for practitioners and educators, the authors argue that social workers can infuse a humanizing element into each of these trends. This will occur, however, only if the profession maintains a dual focus on individuals and the environment.
