This essay provides an overview of prevention in social work. Although prevention is emphasized by many, little systematic attention has been devoted to the subject. Steven Schinke describes some of the preventive efforts in social work and suggests future directions. Steven P. Schinke is a professor in the School of Social Work at Columbia University. He has focused his research on developing and testing interventions to prevent social, behavioral, and health problems among children and adolescents. His publications include Substance Abuse in Children and Adolescents: Intervention and Evaluation (Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage, 1991).
