Sexual Harassment in the Academy: The Case of Women Professors
This chapter explores the sexual harassment of women professors. Survey data from 210 women faculty at Purdue University suggest that sexual harassment is relatively widespread. Approximately one in four women professors claimed that they have been sexually harassed while at the university, and many more claimed to have experienced a variety of behaviors, ranging from sexist comments to sexual assault. The data further indicate that women experience these behaviors from all sources—superiors, peers, and students. The academic environment is then considered in terms of how it may both foster and inhibit the sexual harassment of women faculty.
