Step five is about notching up the instructional performance of your teachers while at the same time fine-tuning your personal instructional leadership capabilities. This aspect of instructional leadership is the most time-consuming and emotionally demanding of any of the seven steps. It is, however, critical to the creation of a true learning community. Heifetz (1994) summarized the challenge when he said, “Leadership …requires a learning strategy.
