“Desegregation or Else”: George Washington Carver Academy: Waco, Texas
Federal court orders cannot be postponed forever. They can be ignored or resisted for a time, but eventually they demand compliance. For close to a half-century, the Waco, Texas, school system faced such an order, in the form of a mandate to desegregate its schools. Finally, the George Washington Carver Academy, once a source of great Black pride in the city, was selected to serve as the solution. Ultimately, partial school desegregation was put in place in the district, and quality middle school education was created at Carver.
