The term ‘special’ implies something distinct which removes it from the dominant culture. Examining the case of special education aids our understanding of the complex relationship between sub-cultures and the dominant culture, both in the broad social context and in the community of the school. Whilst taking this sub-culture as a case study, it is important to conceptualise special education as just one of many other marginalised sub-cultures, each struggling for anti-discrimination legislation and equality of opportunity.
