It is generally accepted that education, or more accurately, schooling, is concerned with more than pupils' academic learning. Nobody would dispute that such learning is important, vital even. To the extent that a pupil's life chances in terms of entry to higher education and employment are significantly affected by performance in public examinations, clearly such learning is a fundamental purpose of schooling. Even if one did not accept such a narrowly instrumentalist view of schooling, academic learning is important. As Pring (1997, p. 84) suggests:
