I am drafting this essay (later than promised) on my new computer, which is on my lap in an empty home office pending the installation of new carpet. Our son, David, and two new friends may be wrestling into trouble downstairs in another empty room—so I'm keeping one ear open to the need for intervention. We bought the laptop to keep our work progressing even though we were moving this summer. It hasn't really helped.
