Beginnings

The word becoming in the title of this essay implies that if someone is now a full professor, he or she must have been something else before. It seems reasonable, then, that before you can understand where someone is at present, you need to know something of that person's history. Toward that end, I provide a bit of my history below; following this, I will attempt to examine some of the realities of professorship as they have affected me.
