This essay began as my part of a panel discussion presented at a 1993 preconference session of the Academy of Management. The session was titled “Working With Doctoral Students” and it included presentations by five other faculty members, with an emphasis on each individual's personal experiences of working with doctoral students. At the time of the presentation, I had just defended my dissertation and had not yet started my new job as an assistant professor at Michigan State University.
