This essay stems from a 1993 Academy of Management preconference symposium on working with doctoral students for which I was a panelist. As a member of that panel, I was asked to reflect on my experiences as a doctoral student with my adviser, Larry Cummings, and discuss how I was beginning to translate what I learned into my own recent work with doctoral students.
