The original initiative to prepare this essay was provided by an invitation from three of the Academy of Management's divisions to present my thoughts, experiences, and feelings about the development of doctoral students. I thank the OB, OMT, and OD Divisions, and Walt Nord and Art Brief in particular, for that invitation.

What I am about to present is, in part, based on that Academy presentation in August 1993. It is also, in part, based on a 1986 paper published in the Organizational Behavior Teaching Review.
