There is no question in my mind that even if I elect to retain the career frame as originally configured, my career picture has been enriched through these “reaching out” experiences. I have also enjoyed the opportunity to experience a realistic preview of a reshaped career structure, constructed from the planes of the original frame.
Although socialized to “cosmopolitan” rather than “local” attitudes early in their graduate careers, most academics have at least some level of commitment to the institutions that employ them, and this tends to increase with their longevity on campus.
