The concept of transition has become central in discussions of youth, especially in the English speaking world, but increasingly also in European countries such as Germany, Norway and the Netherlands. The interest in understanding and in structuring transitions for young people has emerged in response to the failure of traditional pathways towards achieving adulthood. In Australia, Britain and in Canada the interest in youth transitions has focused on the relationship of education and schooling to the labour market.
