One of the main implications of conceptualising youth as a social process is that the focus shifts from young people themselves to the way they negotiate, contest and collude in social processes. The impact of poverty on young people, the marginalisation of school ‘troublemakers’ and ‘failures’, the transformation of the youth labour market in industrialised countries and the rise of global labour markets have a fundamental effect on the experiences of growing up. These processes have historically been central to the social outcomes for young people.
