There have been many studies that aimed to establish priorities for nursing research in clinical practice. Governments, institutions, funding bodies and local personnel all contribute to this debate, and may control what is actually achieved, particularly through the allocation of funding.

Reports a three-round Delphi survey that aimed to establish nursing research priorities on children's intensive care units where extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation was used. Resulting themes identified were: labour intensity, consumerism, ethical issues and clinical issues. All of these have implications for planning and organizing a nursing research strategy within paediatric intensive care (CR 2.66).
