Mental health is not something that is generally talked about, which often results in a lack of understanding. Good mental health is much more than the absence of mental illness, it is about being self-aware and having self-respect. It is also about having the capacity to have some power, control and choice in your life.

The NHS Health Advisory Service defined mental health as:

  • the ability to develop psychologically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually
  • the ability to initiate, develop and sustain mutually satisfying personal relationships
  • the ability to become aware of others and empathise with them
  • the ability to use psychological distress as a developmental process, so that it does not hinder or impair further development.
