The ability to comfort effectively is a vital communication skill with far-reaching consequences. Recipients of sensitive comforting messages experience greater reductions in emotional distress and improved capacity to cope with their problems than do recipients of less sensitive efforts (Jones & Guerrero, 2001; Jones & Wirtz, 2006).
