- understand the different ways social scientists collect data on religion;
- know where and how to access empirical data on religion; and
- be familiar with the requirements for the conduct of ethical research on religion.
In their book Souls in Transition: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of Emerging Adults (2009), scholars Christian Smith and Patricia Snell report that 78 percent of Americans aged 18–23 believe in God, 63 percent think God is a ‘personal being involved in the life of people today’ and 29 percent feel ‘extremely or very close to God’ (Smith and Snell 2009: 119).
