If it is true that no person is an island we may need to look at the way we organise our classrooms from time to time.

For twelve years of schooling, I sat behind other boys and regularly noticed the dandruff in their hair and on their collars and shirts. On reflection, I realise that looking at the backs of hair and at dandruff was probably not the most inspiring setting for thinking creatively or critically. For the first twelve years of my own teaching (four years at university had not offered any alternatives) I subjected my own students to the ‘dandruff regime’ before I was introduced to some cooperative settings.
