Chapter #23: Necessary Multitasking
I never multitask.
Our experience in the classroom and in life shows that although we shouldn’t, we probably multitask during much of the day. In Strategy #15 we reviewed the research on the detrimental effects of multitasking. However, the reality of teaching is that sometimes (oftentimes) multitasking is necessary and unavoidable.
Teachers are expected to (simultaneously) be role models, administrators, disciplinarians, evaluators, facilitators, and sometimes even figurative foster parents. All of these roles must be fulfilled at the same time you are teaching subject matter, adapting the curriculum to meet the needs of your students, preparing students for state and district tests, teaching character education and social and emotional skills, and managing your classroom.
