Success in the education profession calls for a substantial body of knowledge and a comprehensive array of skills. Initial teacher education lays the foundation, and ongoing professional development is essential. However, words like ‘knowledge’, ‘skill’ and ‘values’ are inadequate to describe the capacities that are demonstrated in successful self-managing schools and required to achieve transformation. ‘Sagacity’ seems a better word, but it is important to recover its meaning for it is rarely used in the profession. The Merriam-Webster Online dictionary defines sagacity as ‘the intelligent application of knowledge acquired from years of learning and experience’.
