Discursive psychologies are relatively new approaches within psychology. They are wide-ranging and often complex in their challenges to more traditional, quantitative approaches. The task of introducing areas which are far-reaching, complex and relatively recent is difficult. Some writers choose to divide discursive psychologies into different types. Parker (1997), for example, relies on the historical traditions of debates in other disciplines to present two varieties of discursive work, and Lupton (1992) uses the concepts of ‘macro’ and ‘micro’ approaches to present a similar division. I have taken a somewhat different approach by focusing on the ways in which discursive work challenges psychology's traditional objects of study and notions about the nature of psychological knowledge.
